Did you know that the Metro Ethernet Forum Technical Specification 13 (PDF) requires that User Network Interfaces be hardcoded to full-duplex as specified in section 5.1?
Massive Networks typically takes a full-duplex connection at the carrier NID and hands-off to the customer from an interface on our CPE that is configured for auto-negotiation. This is convenient for testing with a laptop before installation. However, in some cases the customer wishes to test at the carrier NID, for example to rule out issues on an extended demarc. If this is the case, please read on to learn how to set full duplex on your Windows laptop network interface.
Step 1: Open Windows Settings:
From the Start Menu click the gear icon highlighted red in this screen shot. Note that if you hover over this icon it will expand and read “Settings”.
Step 2: Select Network & Internet
In the Windows Settings pane, click “Network & Internet” which is highlighted red in this screenshot:
Step 3: Click Ethernet on the left side
In the Network & Internet settings window, click the “Ethernet” menu on the left side as shown highlighted in red here:
Step 4: Click Change Adapter Options
On the Ethernet settings tab click the “Change Adapter Options” link highlighted here in red:
5) Select a Local Area Connection
Find the Local Area Connection in the Network Connections control panel that corresponds to the wired network interface you’ve plugged in to the NID. If you can see “Change settings of this connection” in the bar above the connections, click it next.
6) Get properties of Local Area Connection
If you can’t see the “Change settings of this connection” link above, then right-click the Local Area Connection that corresponds to the wired network interface you’ve plugged into the NID and choose “Properties”:
7) Click the Advanced tab on the network connection properties pane
8) Find Speed & Duplex settings in the list
Scroll through the advanced configuration list until you see Speed & Duplex and click it.
9) Change the Value of Speed & Duplex
If the site has contracted for 100Mbps or less bandwidth, choose “100 Mbps Full Duplex”. If the site has more than 100 Mbps choose “1.0 Gbps Full Duplex” from the Value list. Then click “OK”. You will want to leave the parent window open so you can revert these changes easily after your tests are completed.
10) Revert back to Auto Negotiation.
Get properties on the Local Area Connection again and go to the Advanced tab and change Speed & Duplex back to “Auto Negotiation”.
